Located on Virginia Beach Boulevard, the Francis Land House, which was once home to six generations of the Francis Land Family, is a beautiful plantation house and also a symbol of rural affluence that was characteristic to the Francis Lands.
Visitors to the Francis Land House can browse through the extensive collection of antiques and reproductions that are on display here. The house is also surrounded by beautiful herb and vegetable gardens which are reminiscent of those which originally adorned the house, and also a history park which is interspersed with interpretative sign exhibits. The house also conducts educational programs for children of all ages like the Once upon a Time workshop which teaches them about life as it was 200 years ago. Children can also experience first hand the toys that were used during that era and journey into the past on a guided tour of the house. Mr. Land's Plantation also teaches them about the history of the Francis Land plantations with a host of reproductions of the artifacts and the machinery which was characteristic to the period.
Children can also learn about the historic past of the Powhatans through the eyes of the Lewis and Clark expedition and delve into the practices of trading and bartering. The courses are molded to enhance the academic curriculum and are often guided by costumed docents. You can visit the Francis Land House between 9 am and 5 pm, Tuesday through Saturday and from 11 am to 5 pm on Sunday. Admission is charged at $4 with special discounts for children and seniors.
