One of the most significant landmarks which bear testament to the changing times that Virginia has experienced, the Adam Thoroughgood House stands as one of the last remnants of a long bygone era of slavery.
The house was constructed on land granted to Adam Thoroughgood, who was then an indentured servant, as a land parcel and was built by one of his grandsons around the late seventeenth century. The house stores a collection of late 17th and early 18th century furniture and allows visitors a unique insight into life as it was lived by the gentry of that era. Guided tours which are conducted through the house by docents in period costumes detail the changes that have taken place in the period between the Colonial times and the modern days. The museum also conducts an array of educational programs for children like the Life along the Chesapeake, which is an hour-long tour which depicts the life and traditions of the Chesapeake Indians through an array of interactive exhibits and activities. The Indenture Adventure educates youngsters about the institution of slavery and how its abolishment has influenced the present-day world.
The Adam Thoroughgood House also conducts several events through the year. Of these, the Superstition Night Tours, which are an apt predecessor to Halloween, leads visitors into an interesting albeit scary trip into the world of the supernatural. The Adam Thoroughgood House also celebrates Thanksgiving, the Colonial way with a lavish feast which visitors can contribute their efforts towards. Young participants can also make their very own corn husk doll to take home with them as a unique souvenir.
Admission is charged at $4 with special discounts for children and seniors. You can visit the Adam Thoroughgood House from 9 am to 5 pm, Tuesday through Saturday and 11 am to 5 pm on Sunday.
