Templo Mayor, the main religious site for the Aztecs, is considered an archaeological ruin site and great tourist attraction. The excavated stone of the Templo Mayor has unearthed signs that the tomb of an Aztec emperor may have been laid to rest there. If this is the case, this would be the first burial site to be found with a leader from the Aztec empire for the 1417-1521 time period. Eduardo Matos, the archaeologist leading this project speculates that this may be a gravestone for a ruler or leader laid to rest. The stone-carved face was found at the bottom of the face of the Templo Mayor, on the western side. Matos believes this is the same area where many of the Aztec leaders were cremated. The 13-foot structure has a date from the 1400s carved on it and has taken over a month to clean. Anyone interested in the ancient history of this country will learn a lot for viewing and researching the Templo Mayor.
