The main square of Mexico City consists of many ties with the past dating back to the times of the Aztec people. North of Veracruz you'll find an archeologist's dream. Although it's called Veracruz, these sites are actually located in an area called Cempoala. The city of Cempola, at one time, was the largest city in the Gulf of Mexico. Cempola is filled with history and still consists of many temples that are still standing. Much of its history involves Hernán Cortés, a Spanish conqueror that confronted the Totonac Indians. This confrontation first took place in Cempola. When the conquistadors first entered the city and seen the Main Temple, they mistook the seashell plaster coating for silver and got very excited. In addition to the Main Temple, you'll also see the Temple of Chimneys and the Temple of the Little Heads.
The Temple of the Little Heads in Veracruz, VZ is located to the east of the square. This Temple, which is also called Templo de las Caritas, is a very interesting site to learn about as well as view. It has a similar resemblance to the Great Pyramid.
