Our Lady of Assumption Cathedral in Veracruz, VZ is located in the downtown section right next to City Hall and the Main Square. This beautiful Cathedral is more than just a place of religion and worship. It is a true landmark in the city. It's a huge building made of concrete with benches outdoors in front of the cathedral allowing people to sit and relax. Our Lady of Assumption Cathedral is a tourist attraction and has been for many years. It's also listed on many brochures for tour guides. The Our Lady of Assumption Cathedral was built in the same spot where a XVII chapel was built between 1807 and 1809. The early construction started in the 17th century and it was finished in 1731. After the original construction, different additions and improvements were made such as construction of the vault and chorus area. With the original construction, the blueprints required five naves. The one that was in the middle was to be the highest alter. The name of this Cathedral was changed to the Cathedral of the Veracruz new diocese in 1963.
Our Lady of Assumption Cathedral is the resting place for Father Dario Acosta Zurita. Zurita was a young Mexican martyr, who died on the alter near the baptismal fountain where he was shot in 1931.
