La Antigua in Veracruz, VZ is also referred to as the "Old Homeland" because of its history which spans back hundreds and hundreds of years. It is a municipality rich in history every where you turn. You will find this place situated at the mouth of the Huitzilapan River which translates to the hummingbird river. Some say that Hernando Cortes arrived in this area via the river.
This municipality is surrounded by the Gulf of Mexico, the city of Veracruz and even the National Bridge. One of the main sites people talk about is often right at the river where there is an old tree that was believed to have been used by Hernando Cortes to tie up his boat. Indeed, there is also a homestead where Cortes was said to have settled for a time.

This mid-19th century parish church display excellent craftsmanship as seen in the baptismal. Of course, the Chapel of the Rosary is older and has a lot more history and life attached to it. It was built in the 1520's and the architecture has a Spanish influence. There is a lovely atrium area as well as a steeple in which bells are still rung.
La Antigua has several military sites that offer a rich look at history. The Cuarteles Santa Ana is one of these sites. It is a military fortress constructed in the 19th century. The house of Hernando Cortes was made from local stone, rocks and coral and reflects the era's building style and techniques.
