Catedral de Nuestra Senora de la Asuncion in Veracruz, Mexico
Catedral de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción in Veracruz, VZ is a stately church with a façade of white stucco amidst a plaza area filled with palm trees and people. Translated roughly to Our Lady of the Assumption, this cathedral was built in 1721 and then sanctified in the early 1730's. It served as this area's main parish church for many years.
The Plaza de Armas is the name of the public square this cathedral is built on and it is quite attractive with various tropical plants and trees like the palm. This whole area is like an oasis of calm amidst the bustling city of Veracruz. The Catedral de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción can be visited by following walkways lined with old-fashioned cobblestone up a small but steep hill. On the way to the cathedral, you will be able to spot quite a few Veracruz sights such as a bullring.
The Catedral de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción was built in a Moorish design, something popular to Spain at the time. The intricacy of the architectural stylings inside is quite lovely. The ceiling has gilded stars which makes looking upward in prayer truly heavenly. You can even view artifacts from the days of Cortes as well as pre-Columbian days. This was officially the first stable Catholic Church in all of the America back in the 1700's. Be sure to catch a cup of coffee nearby and listen for the church bells when they toll. It is surely something to hear.
