Veracruz Weather Information

The weather in large Mexican cities can range from a stable bath of sun to a stable bath of rain. In actuality, you never know what might blow in at any time of the year, but Veracruz seems to enjoy more extended periods of hot and humid weather versus cold and rain, but you can never completely know what is going to happen when you show up for your vacation.

Veracruz is located along the Gulf of Mexico coast in Central Mexico. The city extends for 425 miles along the coast and back into the highlands of Central Mexico as well. Your typical coast weather is going to be hot and humid and the temperatures get cooler as you move into the mainland. However, the weather that comes with being on the coast can usually mean two things — hot and humid or cold and rainy.

Summers in Veracruz tend to be hot and sometimes uncomfortably hot. This is especially true of May and June with the sun beats down hard on this part of Mexico. The highlands region around the town of Xalapa tends to have more comfortable summer temperatures with chilly mornings.

Rain is possible in Veracruz throughout the year. The official rainy season is April through November, which also happens to be hurricane season as well. The Gulf of Mexico sees its fair share of hurricanes each year with the Yucatan Peninsula catching plenty of them. Veracruz is locate just below the peninsula in the little bend, so the city may not catch a hurricane directly, but they are bound to catch a lot of rain and harsh winds during this time of the season.

Veracruz is also considered a monsoon area. Rain in the city tends to be harsh, but brief. Most rainfall occurs in the late afternoon, which leaves your evenings cooler and dryer. Although the rain may be fierce, it is often welcomed on hot and humid days as it can set you up for a beautiful evening in the city.

Temperatures throughout the year remain fairly stable with the lowest temperatures being in the months of December through early March. The highs during these months stay around the lower seventies in Fahrenheit with the lows in the lower sixties. Come April, you can expect the temperatures to warm up to the lower eighties and reach the upper eighties throughout June, July, August and September. It is not uncommon to see the temperatures get much higher during this time of the year as well, often up into the hundreds. The temperatures begin to gradually drop come October.

March through mid-June is considered the rainy season of Veracruz. This is also monsoon season when heavy and fierce rains are common, as are harsh winds. Another unique weather condition that occurs in Veracruz are nortes.

A norte is a cold front and is caused by the high pressure in the nearby mountains being funneled into the low and narrow land between the mountains and the sea, which is where Veracruz sits. Nortes may last from 12 hours to a few days and the winds can get as high as 75 miles per hour. The winds are less harsh as you move inland. Intense nortes tend to occur in November and December, but the official season is from October to May.

Typically, you can expect pretty decent weather while visiting Veracruz. During the summer months, you are definitely going to experience very warm and hot temperatures and the sea keeps the humidity pretty high, but if you want to get out of the hot city for a day, head to the mountains for cooler temperatures.
