The Music of Veracruz

The Mexican culture is rich in a number of ways, but this is even truer in their rhythms and cheerful melodies. Veracruz has played a large part in the development and styles of music that are indigenous to the entire country. One of the most notable styles of music is the "son jarocho."  This style incorporates Mexican folk music and Cuban sounds. The music has its roots in Veracruz and a number of different styles also influence it including marimba, comparsa and danzon.

One of the most easily recognized songs by Americans that comes from Veracruz is "La Bamba."  The song actually has its roots in the traditional music of Veracruz called "son jarocho."  The Spanish word "son" stands for folk music and "jarocho" is the particular style of music that originated in this region of Veracruz and up the coast to Tehuantepec. This music can be traced back to the African, Spanish and other indigenous cultures. The West African influence provides the heavily repetitive beat and the improvisational lyrics. The theatrical style of the music evolved from Spain where the themes and lyrics of songs often focused on animals. They also utilized soloists as well as groups in singing. Jarocho groups usually feature three stringed instruments such as a folk harp, jaranas and octagonal framed drums. They also use a small square platform where they can dance and show off their foot work.

The term marimba applies to various folk traditional instruments that were developed in West Africa. The traditional marimba bands are very popular in nearby Guatemala as well as other southern areas of Mexico. In Veracruz, you will find marimba bands lined up on the streets playing their traditional folk music. They may also combine their instruments with drums and other instruments as well. The unique sound of the marimba can be found resonating throughout the streets each night around restaurants and bars.

Comparsa music and dance can be described as carnavalesque. This music and dancing has been able to maintain a strong identity through the changing times of the city and is very important to the city's festivals and especially in Carnaval. The dance to comparsas are unique in that it is well suited for walking, which makes it an excellent dance for Carnaval because of the numerous parades that the dancer's participate in.

There are two types of danzon dance. One is the Veracruz version and the other is the Cuban version. Cuba has had a large impact on the Veracruz culture, so it is no surprise that they share the same flavor of dance and music. However, the Cuban danzon is much different. Danzon music features brass instruments and string instruments, which is similar to the same style that is played in Cuba.

Music is a large part of any culture and the same is especially true for Veracruz. Wherever you go through the city you will hear music playing and the rhythms of the marimbas. While you are visiting the city, take a moment on the street to listen and applaud the talented musicians who play there.
