With more than 20 branches and outreach offices, Vancouver Public Library's total collection numbers about 2.7 million items — books, magazines, newspapers, video materials, DVDs, audio materials, CDs, microform etc. The Central Branch alone houses half of these items (1.3 million). Of this number, 1.2 million are books. The Central Branch has more than 50,000 videocassettes, DVDs and compact discs in its collection. All branches of the Vancouver Public Library circulate a total of more than 6,000 items per day.
The main facility of this impressive library system is known as Library Square Conference Centre. It is much more than a place to get information, however. Visitors enjoy its architecture, with high glass ceilings, but also benefit from the excellent meeting and conference facilities. With more than 12,000 square feet of space for events and several popular meeting rooms, the centre has been the site of hundreds of special events, conventions and exhibits since opening in 1995.
The various meeting rooms and spaces are excellent for conferences, exhibits, film projects, parties, lectures, trade shows and weddings. Financial support comes from the City of Vancouver for this library system with almost 400,000 thousand cardholders.
