What began in 1951 as a project of the Vancouver Public Aquarium Association has grown into Vancouver Aquarium Marine Science Centre, the largest in Canada and one of the largest in all of North America. Officially named a Canadian public aquarium in 1956, this venue features naturalists and other expert staff who help visitors enjoy and learn at the same time.
Always self-supporting, the Vancouver Aquarium Marine Science Centre now covers more than 100,000 square feet of exhibit space and employs almost 400 people. Adult admission is $19.95, with reduced prices for seniors and teenagers of $14.95 and children under 12 - $11.95. Members of the Vancouver Aquarium group can avoid lines at this very popular aquarium by using the members' Express entrance.
Among the animals at the aquarium are sea lions, beluga whales, dolphins, sea otters and sharks. The Vancouver Aquarium Marine Science Centre is recognized around the globe as a Marine Mammal Rescue and Rehabilitation Program site. The facility also features the UpStream Café and SubShop as well as the ClamShell Gift Shop. The best time to visit is before 11 a.m or after 2:30 p.m.
Group bookings should be made by calling (604) 659-3552 or 1-800-931-1186 (Monday through Friday). Gift certificates are available for animal encounters or trainer tours as well. The offices are open from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Gift certificates may also be purchased at the Membership Desk.
Prospective visitors should be aware that sometimes the Vancouver Aquarium Marine Science Centre is closed for private functions. It is best to contact the facility to make sure that the aquarium is open to the public.
