New Westminster bears with it a policing history that dates back to 1873 and continues to expand and develop with every passing year. It is this heritage that the New Westminster Police Museum commemorates with its expansive collection of artifacts and memorabilia which trace the growth of New Westminster policing through the years.
The Museum is located in the lobby of the police station, which in turn is tucked away in the old Federal Building. Spread over 1300 square feet, the museum showcases a collection of objects that were used by the Police Service through their 128 years of service. Of particular interest is the Harley Davidson police motorcycle which dates back to 1958 and is still resplendent in all its former glory. The Police Museum also houses an authentic jail cell, which you can pop into, and photograph yourself as a jailbird, sans the punishment! You can also browse through the collection of firearms which has evolved in tune with the changing times.
The New Westminster Police Museum also displays a comprehensive collection of photographs which depict the Police Service from its early days which began with the BC Provincial Police who were later taken over by the local police force. A visit to the museum is undoubtedly a remarkable eye opener as it journeys through the one-constable police service to the present day force which is comprised of over a hundred members.
The New Westminster Police Museum is open all through the week during regular business hours and does not charge visitors an admittance fee. For further information, you can refer to the website http://www.newwestpolice.org or call the New Westminster Police Museum at 604-525-5411.
