Located at Royal Avenue in New Westminster, the Irving House Historic Center allows visitors to explore the rich heritage of the city by simply stepping back in time!
This colonial edifice, which was once home to the reputed Captain William Irving, is spread over 14 lavish rooms, each of which has a mesmerizing story to tell. The Irving House was constructed in 1865 and was famous as one of the most magnificent homes of the era. Today, visitors can wander through the house, which is still maintained in all its former glory, to experience a unique glimpse of life as it were in the yesteryears. The architecture is a veritable lesson in the Victorian style with its elaborate ceiling plasterwork, while the opulent marble fireplaces still retain the warmth which they once infused this house with. Restoration of the home and its maintenance has been painstakingly accurate, with even the original wallpaper still adorning the aged walls!
You can even explore the Irving House on a guided tour which is led by a docent adorned in period costume. The House also conducts several events through the year, which host heritage performances by enthusiastic volunteers. Visitors of all ages can participate in heritage craft workshops which allow them a hands-on experience of the early days of New Westminster. You can even volunteer your services to the Irving House and assist in research, help preserve the artifacts or even present musical performances.
At the end of your visit, stop by at the gift shop to browse through an array of Victorian-themed memorabilia, history books, miniature China pieces and even old-time toys which make excellent gift ideas.
