The Gulf Georgia Cannery National Historic Site was built in 1894. Since that time, this historic landmark has been used by fishermen. This cannery is also used as a reduction plant and net loft. The cannery is made up of several buildings occupying an area of 4,673 square meters for all of fishermen needs. Besides the cannery building itself, the area includes an icehouse, vitamin oil shed, drum storage shed, watchman's house and lead foundry. These buildings are all operable and being used today. There is a separate area that you are able to tour that exhibits a lot of the information about the Cannery.
While visiting the Cannery exhibit, you will be able to tour the area and see some of the artifacts that are used to fish in the area. You will also see some of the equipment used on a regular basis. Not only will you get to see firsthand what goes into fishing in the area you will be able to learn about the historic and present day fish industry. The fish industry is important to the financial success of this area of Vancouver and because of this, the community takes pride in the Cannery and keeping it looking and operating well.
You will find the Cannery in a historical area within the village of Steveston. This is good place to visit for a day sightseeing historical buildings and landmarks. The area provides many places to tour to learn more about this area. Just by walking around the neighborhood you will be able to see the care that these residents have put into preserving the area's most valuable industry.
