Vancouver is loaded with interesting and fun places to see and things to do. Everywhere you go there are individual little sections that are loaded with historical buildings and attractions. Gaolers Mews in Gastown in Vancouver, BC, CA is one of these sites. Gastown is where Vancouver got its beginning with everything being added to this area through the years.
Gaolers Mews in Gastown is a very interesting spot. At one time, it was the county jail. You'll feel like you've taken a walk back in history.......way back history to when things were simple. You see retro signs, with brick and cobblestone everywhere you look. It's located behind the Gassy Jack statue, which is a conversation piece and landmark on its own. It's right on the corner of a well-known part of Gastown. Gaolers Mews in Powell and Alexander join to form Water Street. Anyone you ask in the area, will know this part of town.
While in Gaolers Mews, you see a historical stairwell that resembles a fire escape. Memorable things have happened on this stairwell. At the end of the stairwell, you'll find the infamous red door belonging to the Shebeen Whiskey Bar, a popular hangout. Described as being an alley, Gaolers right next to the Cowboy Store and has more than one entrance. One is between The Salty Tongue and the Cowboy Store. The other entrance is between the architecture firm and the dog store.
This is, by far, one of the most interesting places you'll see in Vancouver. Many tourists come here just to take pictures of this alley.
