The second most important holiday in the Chinese calendar is the Mid-Autumn Moon Festival. The full moon symbolizes togetherness, harmony and family unity in the Chinese culture. The Mid-Autumn Moon Festival is held on the fifteenth day of the lunar calendars eighth month when the moon appears the largest and brightest. Chinese families gather together to celebrate the end of the harvest season and the fall equinox. This festival allows the family to spend time together. Vancouver is a great place to visit this festival. The celebration includes sampling moon cake which is a traditional round pastry served for this festival filled with red bean, lotus paste, egg yolks, or nuts. There are craft activities, fortune tellers using Joss sticks and introductions into the game of Mahjong, as well as demonstrations of Tai Chi and art. Admission to this event is by donation, and the festival is a great place to learn about the Chinese culture.
