Some visitors to this excellent dining establishment cannot help but ask about the unique name. Most know the word "Montauk" from Montauk Point in New York. It so happens that the owner of Montauk Seafood Grill in Vail, Colorado, grew up in that eastern, oceanfront location and took the name to the mountains of the American west.
Regular customers and first-time visitors see Montauk Seafood Grill as a busy place and indeed it is quite popular with the Vail crowd. There is something of a sea/nautical theme and Gary Boris, the owner, adds to this by having fresh fish flown in from east and west each day. This, of course, makes it one of the best seafood stops in the mountainous state. Hawaiian Ahi, seared but rare, is considered a signature dish for Montauk Seafood Grill. However, diners also rave about the steak, pork chops, chicken and pasta.
Montauk Seafood Grill is located in an area called Lionhead Village, just a short distance from the village of Vail itself. Many diners enjoy the open kitchen, since they are able to see the hard-working cooks and staff. Others love the patio, which is great for warm mountain days. This restaurant has been a favorite with Vail residents and visitors for nearly 20 years and is always a top pick in Rocky Mountain area surveys.
The wine selections are not to be dismissed either, as Wine Spectator magazine has sent a few awards this way. Dinner is served every night from 5:30 p.m. to close. More information is available by calling (970) 476-2601.
