For those who think that a trip to Vail, Colorado, involves learning how to ski like a pro in order to negotiate the fast and exciting downhill tracks, there is a pleasant surprise in store. This long-standing ski destination also offers Adventure Ridge, an area of fun for all ages and levels of skill. In fact, some of the activities require little skill and just the willingness to try something new.
Adventure Ridge is generally open from mid-December to mid-April, depending on weather conditions. The site is closed on Sunday and Monday.
Visitors can have fun tubing down the hill on one of several tubing-only lanes, and get back to the start on the lift. Tubing begins at 2:30 p.m. each afternoon, with one hour sessions. An hour tubing session is $24.
Some folks head straight to the ski bikes when they arrive in Vail. These part-bike/part ski machines are best for those with ski experience at the intermediate level or above. Sessions begin at 5 p.m. and guides will not only instruct first-time riders but will also lead riders down the mountain. A guided tour costs $65. Reservations are recommended.
In addition, Adventure Ridge offers mini-snowmobiles, ideal for children from age 6 to age 12. Sessions being every half hour (weather conditions determine if mini-snowmobiles will run. $24 per session.
Many of the activities available at Adventure Ridge involve slower paced fun, such as guided snowshoe hikes at 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. (970) 479-4675 for the Nature Discovery Center.
