The Arizona Theatre Co. in Tucson, AZ, known as one of the most dynamic theatres in the country, got its beginning in 1067 as the Arizona Civic Theatre. Through the talent and ingenuity of Sandy Rosenthal, the theatre gained professional status in 1972 with the hiring of Actors' Equity performers on contract. In 1979, the name was changed to Arizona Theatre Company.
One of the conditions of the Arizona Theatre (a non-profit theatre) is that the ticket prices will always be within reach of the community members. They do not rely solely on ticket revenues to keep the theatre going, rather depending on grants for government agencies and contributions from corporations, foundations and individuals.
Since its beginning, the Arizona Theatre has put out over 200 plays from classics such as Shaw, Shakespeare and Moliere as well as famous writers like Stoppard, Shepard and Fugard. It is also constantly in the process of developing and promoting special programs and new works on the mainstage.
The Arizona Theater Company sponsors special Holiday Tours where they'll take you to London or New York to see stunning new performers as well as famous performers.
Some of the presentations you can plan to see in the next season are To Kill a Mockingbird, Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde, The Clean House, Touch the Names, The Pajama Game and many more.
They also have a special for the ladies called "Girls' Night Out", which provides a special show along with a visit to the spa and topping it off is a champagne and dessert reception. This is a great time for all involved.
The Arizona Theatre is responsible for promoting many forms of music and talent in the area. One of their sources of pride is the Summer on Stage 2007 Program that helps talented young students in the area as well as abroad. They work with the students in many different cultural events such as drama, music, voice, etc.
