The University of New Mexico-Taos operates today as a branch community college of the University of New Mexico system. In general, the branch provides instruction leading to associate degrees, vocational certificates, adult basic education and workforce training.
There are actually four locations for The University of New Mexico-Taos: Camino Real building at 115 Civic Plaza; El Pueblo Hall at 114 Civic Plaza; Klauer Campus (State Road 570); UNM-Taos Medical Center at 1398 Weimer Road. Each of these locations offers specific services, ranging from business offices and student affairs to department classrooms and computer labs. Classes are also held at Taos High School and some services are offered at the Family Resource Center (1335 Gusdorf Road). Programs offered include Arts and Culture; Business and Computer Technology; Professions and Liberal Arts; Holistic Health and Human Services; Science and Natural Resources; Trades and Industry.
The history of a Taos-based university stretches back to 1923, with art classes offered on a limited basis. Available classes and programs expanded in number throughout the 1940s and 1950s, until New Mexico Highlands University began offering courses in 1970. Northern New Mexico Community College offered courses in the 1970s, further expanding opportunities for area students. The University of New Mexico-Taos Education Center was chartered by the state in 1982. UNM-Taos eventually became a branch of The University of New Mexico in 2002-2003.
