he Navajo Gallery in Taos houses the largest collection in the United State of the works of R. Gorman. The artist lived in Taos and established thegllery in 1968 to showcase his own work. Gorman is regarded by many to be the premiere contemporary Navajo Indian or Dine artist and he has been dubbed 'The Picasso of American Indian Art'. His work is popular with both collectors of Indian art and contemporary works. Gorman died in 2005 and his gallery features his original artwork in oil, pastel, plus ceramics, lithographs and books.
Gorman's art features the lives of Native American Indians and in particular women. He has created ceramic works that features stylized cats and the female face, plus silkscreen works in vibrant colors. His paintings depict traditional Indian scenes such as Journey to Sacred Lake, the canyon landscapes of Beauty Way and Night Stories which highlights the constellations of the night sky and alludes to Indian legends. His vintage works depict women preparing food, cooking, looking after children and performing ceremonies.
His publications, available from the gallery include Nude and Food IV — The Millennium and Mystique - The Art of R.C. Gorman which features over 100 of his works on DVD with a musical accompaniment. Works of art are for sale, plus the poster shop has prints of many vintage works and newly released pieces. A calendar including his oils, pastel and bronze sculpture has been produced every year for the past 20 years and is a best seller.
