If the tiny village of Arroyo Seco was not enough to draw the curious and the genuinely interested, Arroyo Seco Mercantile certainly should be. According to local historians, the structure in which Arroyo Seco Mercantile is now located was built in the 1890s and was used as a general store for decades.
In 1993, an enterprising Jeanie Clinton purchased the site. Since that time the Mercantile, as it is known, has tried to be a servant to residents of the village and the surrounding area. Shoppers will find antiques and unusual collectible items in the store's stock, as well as everyday items, gifts and books.
Arroyo Seco is a very small, but interesting place, with shops, galleries and a café to serve the casual visitor. For nearly two decades it has been home to a group of artists, potters, shop keepers and others who wanted to get away from the urban lifestyle. The Mercantile is sometimes considered the center of activity with its inventory of vintage American West selection, candy, kitchenware, office supplies and more. Since its restoration by volunteers, this prominent shop's rebirth was part of the rejuvenation of the village itself. Proximity to the beautiful city of Taos, New Mexico makes Arroyo Seco accessible and pleasant to visit.
The Arroyo Seco Mercantile is open every day. General hours are 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. except Sunday — 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Located at 488 State Road 150, near Taos, Arroyo Seco Mercantile is a must stop for many area visitors.
