While the
Lowry Park Zoo in Tampa, Florida is already recognized as one of the finest family-oriented zoos in the United States, staff members do not rest on their laurels.
Set on 56 acres of natural habitat, the zoo has seven distinct exhibit areas, including Asian Domain, Primate World, Manatee and Aquatic Center, Florida Wildlife Center, Free-Flight Aviary, Wallaroo Station (children's zoo) and the newest addition, Safari Africa. This new exhibit area opened in 2004 to highlight elephants, giraffes and other native African animals. The area features giraffe feeding and camel rides. White rhinos were introduced at the zoo in 2005, with a rhino encounter planned and an aerial ride that gives visitors a view of the zoo from above.
Lowry Park Zoo in Tampa is operated by the Lowry Park Zoological Society a non-profit organization that focuses on education and conservation. The first Tampa zoo was opened in the 1930s, displaying animals native to the Florida coastal areas. The zoo moved to Lowry Park a few years later. The
Lowry Park Zoo Association was formed in 1982.
