The Oldest House Complex in St Augustine, Texas includes Florida's oldest house. The site itself has been occupied since the 1600s and González-Alvarez House dates from the beginning of the 17th century. The house demonstrates Spanish, British and American influences, and was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1970. The museum complex is owned by the St. Augustine Historical Society that itself dates to 1881 and is the oldest historical society in Florida.
The complex includes González-Alvarez House, a gallery housing changing exhibits, and gardens. The story house with white walls, bargeboard facade and shutters on the windows, is an example of a fine colonial house. It features a restored 18th century kitchen, bedrooms with fourposter beds. There are period details and furniture throughout the house and artifacts including china dinner sets and playing cards.
The house gardens surrounded by traditional garden walls are reminiscent of Spanish colonial gardens . There are brick walkways and stone loggias and is planted with subtropical colorful flowers, fig, orange and banana trees — and Florida' state tree the Sabal Palm.. There are oaks and grape arbors providing shade in the peaceful and tranquil garden. It is a lovely setting for weddings and the gardens accommodate a party of up to 250 guests.
There is a museum store selling souvenirs and an extensive selection of local history books. The Museum Complex is open every day from 9.00am to 5.00pm and there are discounts for students plus guided educational tours. There is also a picnic area at the Complex.
