Traveling to Sedona, AZ

Sedona is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the state of Arizona. With spectacular views, a unique culture and many things to see and do, it's easy to understand why it's so popular. You will not find the average tourist crowds flocking through the streets of Sedona, though you will find busier seasons when there are quite a few more visitors. If you are traveling to Sedona or anywhere new for that matter, it's usually helpful to have some travel tips for the trip.

Driving:

If you are driving to Sedona, you should know a few things prior to embarking on your expedition. The first thing that you should know, should you choose to drive to this city, is that the landscape and geography are very different from what many visitors are used to. If you have driven to Sedona, you understand exactly what is meant. There are some very deep drops on the road to Sedona and it can seem as though the road is only inches from dropping you into a chasm. Keep this in mind while driving. Another piece of advice to bear in mind is to take it slow. The area has a lot of wildlife, scenic vistas and beautiful geography; others are enjoying the same thing you are.

For first time visitors to Sedona, understand that you should plan your trip so that you arrive during daylight hours. Sedona is a low light city, due to the proximity of the Flagstaff observatory; you won't find very many streetlights in or around town and the desert night gets very dark. Plan accordingly so that you can arrive during the day and find your way around. Visiting a new city and getting lost immediately is never fun.

Bus Travel:

If you are planning to take Greyhound to Sedona, you will have to change your plans. Currently, the bus routes only go as far as Flagstaff. From this point, you have two options: rent a car or take a charter bus. There are some great charter companies around Flagstaff if you choose to go this route. If you rent a car, bear in mind the advice given above.

Air Travel:

If you are planning to fly to Sedona, you will have to fly into either Phoenix or Flagstaff. Phoenix is served by a large commercial airport, while smaller flights can be taken to the strip in Flagstaff. Once in the city of your choice, you will have to charter a bus or rent a vehicle to get you the rest of the way to Sedona. There are many rental companies in each city, though, if you are driving, Flagstaff is only about 30 minutes from Sedona.

Trains:

There are several train tour packages offered to get you to Sedona, but they are all two way tickets, offering tours of many areas surrounding Sedona. If you disembark in Sedona and do not catch the train when it departs, you will need to rent a vehicle in town.
