More to do In Sedona: Museums and EducationWhile the beauty of Sedona and the surrounding area offers travelers unlimited opportunities for outdoor fun and excitement, there is also much to see indoors in Sedona and around the area. There are many fine museums and educational experiences to found that will open your eyes to what life was like in this fantastic area. Whether you want to learn about the early pioneers or the American Indians or do some amazing stargazing, you can find it all in and around Sedona. The Sedona Heritage museum offers information about the heritage of the area, from the pioneers to Hollywood influences. Special programs are available that include demonstrations and classes, as well as picnics and even weddings in the beautiful scenic area. The main building of this museum, called the Jordan House, is the home of Walter and Ruth Jordan. The original log cabin is found within the home, completely restored with original furnishings. This offers a great view of pioneer life in the area. The other rooms were added in the early 1900's and each offers something different. You can find information about the many movies, which have been filmed in Sedona as well as learn about the National Forestry Service's efforts in the area. There is also a large number of vintage farm equipment to be enjoyed. Lowell Observatory: One of the more popular destinations in the area is the amazing Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff. Located just 30 minutes outside of Sedona, the observatory offers tours, viewings and much more to entice anyone who has ever looked up at the stars and dreamed. The Lowell Observatory is located right in Flagstaff, just outside of downtown. You can set up tours for groups as large as 60 persons or as small as just a couple. If you take your tour in the evening, it will cost a little more, but you will be able to use the telescope for viewing! This is truly an amazing observatory, which has contributed much to our understanding of our solar system and the universe in general. If your group is too large to feasibly use the telescope, the day tours are less expensive and just as comprehensive. Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum: If you feel like a quick drive to Tucson, you can visit the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum. This is an incredible institution, combining a zoo, botanical garden and historical museum in a single package. Offer an up close look at local wildlife, including mountain lions and more, the museum is one of the most popular stops in the state. With 300 animal species, 1,200 different kinds of plants and two miles of walking trail, this museum is necessary for any nature lover. There are many more museums and places of interest in the area that feature the natural beauty found around Sedona as well as many artifacts left from the area's past residents. No matter if you are interested in nature, history or both, you will find something to attract you here. |
