Cliff Dwellings
You'll explore authentic cliff dwellings during your time on the Ancient Ruin Tour.
For adventure seekers and those who are interested in learning more about the history of the area's first inhabitants, the rocky wilderness surrounding Sedona provides more than enough opportunity for exploration. The ancient cliff dwellings and ruins that dot the landscape stand in testimony to the rich history and culture of the state. Whether you are simply looking for an exciting vacation spot or you are a weekend archeologist, you will certainly find plenty of exciting opportunities in Sedona to make your trip memorable. Within an hour's drive of Sedona you will find an extensive number of small ruin sites as well as larger sites. Along the edges of the Verde River, stands Tuzigoot. This Sinaqua pueblo was constructed atop a hill that overlooks the river valley. The ruins are preserved today as Tuzigoot National Monument. Visitors can explore the interpretive trail that makes its way through the ruins, which have been partially restored. Montezuma Castle, of course, is one of the most well known ruins in the surrounding area. The structure was originally built by the Sinaqua more than 700 years ago. The ruins are a testimony to the daring architecture skills of the Sinaqua; featuring carved out recesses which stand high above Beaver Creek. Historians believe the site served as a type of multi-family residential complex. Palatki is also a great place to explore and learn more about Native American culture. Here, you will find 2-story masonry buildings complete with pictographs that line the cliff face. Well marked trails aide exploration of the area along with volunteer site stewards who are happy to answer questions. Honanki is situated about three miles past Palatki and is on the same access road. When it comes to pictographs, Honanki is a world class site; featuring writings and symbols painted on the rock surfaces as opposed to the petroglyphs which are commonly pecked onto the rock surfaces in other areas. You will find a diverse style of architecture here that is certainly worth checking out. To enjoy everything red rock country has to offer there is no better way than with an adventurous tour through the ancient ruins. The Ancient Ruin Tour takes you on an exhilarating Jeep tour of the rugged terrain to explore the many archaeological wonders off the surrounding area up close and personal.
