The Waterfall Gardens on Second Avenue are a one-of-a-kind oasis of peace and tranquility, nestled in the very heart of the hustle and bustle that defines modern-day urban life.
Built in 1977 by eight Japanese stone masons, the gardens recreate the serenity of a Zen garden while adhering to the restrictions imposed by way of space and the surroundings. The show-stopper of the Waterfall Gardens is undoubtedly the magnificent 22 foot waterfall which tumbles over granite boulders into a traditional Japanese pool. It is from this breathtaking centerpiece that the park derives its name. The garden, which was commissioned by the Annie E Casey Foundation, was opened by park developer Jim Casey, who is best-remembered for the creation of the United Parcel Service. Accordingly, the park also houses a plaque which pays tribute to this noteworthy contribution.
The Waterfall Gardens allow weary office goers the opportunity to escape the dreariness of city life without even so much as leaving the locality. The roaring waterfall fades the noise from the traffic, while the landscaped grounds soothe frazzled bodies and minds. You can stop by the park at lunch at relax on the benches, or even carry a picnic basket along to the to the small iron tables to catch a spot of sunshine.
Admission to the Waterfall Gardens is free to the public and you can visit the park from 8 in the morning to 6 in the evening. For further details, you can contact the information center at 206 684 4075.
