Established in 1952, the Museum of History and Industry is Seattle is devoted to preserving the rich history of the region while also spreading awareness amongst visitors with the array of interpretative exhibits and educational programs that are offered here.
The Museum houses a number of rotating exhibits besides its acclaimed permanent installation. The permanent exhibit titled 'Essential Seattle' traces the development over 150 years of history through the eyes of some of its most prominent residents while also detailing the significant events that have shaped the modern-day Seattle. The rotating exhibits include the Audubon Collection which consists of 60 of the original hand-colored engravings from the 'Birds of America' series, besides a selection of letters, rare books and photographs. You can also view the Boomtown exhibit which recreates the Seattle of the late 1800s, right before it was ravaged by the Great Fire. There is also the Hammons House exhibit which is a made-to-scale miniature version of a South Colonial Mansion, the Neon Collection which displays priceless neon signs, including the Blue Flame that shone above Natural Gas as well as the 'R' from the Rainer Brewery. The Museum also boasts of the Seattle City Light Building Mural which was crafted by celebrated artist Jean Cory Beall in 1958, and is centered on the theme of energy in all its forms.
The Museum of History and Industry also conducts a number of educational programs including the 'History — Fact v/s Fiction' workshop which encourages middle school students to delve into Seattle's glorious past and sift through the authentic and the fabricated and even create an exhibit of their own! You can visit the museum from 10 am to 5 pm, all through the week. The Museum also hosts Free First Thursdays which allow visitors free admission into the museum on the first Thursday of every month and explore the collections until 8 in the evening. Regular admission is pried at about $7 per person, with special discounts for children and seniors.
