The Seattle Center Monrail conveniently connects downtown with the Seattle Center, the Emerald City's mecca of tourism. The 1962 World's Fair brought the world's first full-scale monorail system to Seattle. Traveling at 50 mph, Seattle Center Monorail trains quickly became the pride of Seattle, making the cover of Life Magazine in 1962.
Seattleites still love the monorail, which makes daily runs. The SCM makes stops at the Seattle Center (home of the Space Needle), Westlake Center (a shopping mall), Pacific Science Center, and Experience Music Project. Architect Frank Gehry even designed his melted-metal EMP building to gracefully wrap around the monorail track. The trains carry approximately 2.5 million riders every year and are especially useful during major festivals and sporting events. The SCM is one rail with several destinations and a lot of history.
