Residents of Savannah Georgia don't have lack of culture with the Lucas Theatre a major attraction in their city. Visitors as well as locals come to Lucas Theatre to see some great past and present performances that include the classic Nutcracker, The Golden Pecan, a sequel to the ever-popular Nutcracker, pianist Helen Huang, Savannah Music Festival and many more.
The Lucas Theatre was opened in December, 1921 after two years of planning by Arthur Lucas and C.K. Howell, an architecture associate. The Lucas Theatre was the only one of the 40 theaters owned by Lucas that was actually named after him. A showing of "Camille" was presented for the grand opening of the theater. For a long time, the Lucas Theatre was a favorite venue for many different types of performances including theater groups, vaudeville acts and movies. With the addition of television of most homes, the popularity of the theatre began to wane. In 1976, the Lucas Theatre closed. Although many people tried to reopen the building as different restaurants or comedy clubs, no effort was successful until restorations began in 1986 to demolish the building and make a parking garage. Interested individuals pooled their resources and started The Lucas Theatre for the Arts. After a more than $12 million restoration, the Lucas Theatre once again opened for business in December, 2000. Their first showing of Gone with the Wind was followed by many popular performances. With the support of the local college, the theatre is once again thriving and successful. The theatre is also available for rent for many events or groups.
