In 1839 the Georgia General Assembly chartered the private not for profit Georgia Historical Society. The Georgia Historical Society is one of the oldest historical societies in the United States. It is dedicated to finding, caring for and sharing Georgia's rich history.
The Georgia Historical Society is located in the beautiful city of Savannah, Georgia. Savannah is the perfect place to house the magnificent library of the Georgia Historical Society and to host the Society's special events. The library alone has over 4 million manuscripts, 100,000 photographs, 30,000 architectural drawings, 15,000 books and many maps, artifacts and other things important to the history of the people of Georgia.
The Georgia Historical Society also engages in other educational endeavors in addition to maintaining the library. It publishes two magazines that are meant to teach people about the history of the State. It also works closely with both the public school districts and universities to teach Georgian history in an exciting and memorable way. Further, the Society holds special lectures and events throughout the year. Every year, the Society hosts the Georgia Days to commemorate the founding of the state of Georgia in 1773.
While the Georgia Historical Society makes its home in Savannah, it is committed to preserving the history of the entire state of Georgia. Accordingly, it is actively engaged in its Georgia Historical Marker Program. That program seeks to educate people about Georgia history by placing distinctive descriptive markers at significant sites in the state.
Georgia has an interesting and exciting past. The Georgia Historical Society runs many special programs and keeps regular hours for visitors so that natives and tourists alike can enjoy the state's past.
