Having claims as the oldest continuous black baptist church in America, the First Bryan Baptist Church stands as a truly historic part of our nation's history. Though the actual building wasn't erected until 1873, the congregation carries a history much older. In 1788, a man named Andrew Bryan purchased his freedom and began a small congregation for area black baptists. A few years later, in 1793, Bryan was able to secure the land where the church now stands, carrying on with his work.
Interestingly enough, the original congregation became divided in 1859 due to divided viewpoints within the church, with both the First Bryan Baptist Church and First African Baptist Church having ties to the original congregation built by Andrew Bryan. Today, the First Bryan Baptist Church continues to serve the community, offering Sunday School starting at 9:30 a.m. and Sunday Service beginning at 11 a.m.
