Savannah ParksSavannah, Georgia is not lacking in beautiful areas. This historic, elegant town is just a wonderful spot for everyone who loves fascinating things. Here are some parks and monuments that welcome visitors and help educate you about this enchanting area. Savannah's first recreational park was developed in the 1840s by William Brown Hodgson, who decided that the town needed an area like this. This park includes walkways, benches, landscaping and fountains. In 1867, the 21-acre Park Extension was added, and was originally used as a military parade ground. These grounds also feature dummy forts, which were used for training during World War I. Forsyth is the largest park in Savannah and contains monuments and memorials to historical figures. Movie lovers will recognize this park from the movie Forest Gump. You will be delighted by this gorgeous, scenic place. Fort Pulaski National Monument The location of a major Civil War battle, Fort Pulaski was captured by the Union in the Civil War and was the place where many Georgians were recruited into the Union army. Fort Pulaski is rich in history, and the National Monument offers visitors the opportunity to become educated about this area, soldier life, and the role it played in the Underground Railroad. Today, the grounds of the fort has scenic marshland, a wide variety of animal life and vegetation. Tour guides will help you learn about all of this, and special events feature different parts of the fort's history. This is a great visiting spot for any Civil War buff, and those that enjoy learning about our nation's history. This barrier island near historic Savannah offers visitors beautiful camping and picnic areas, along with nature trails, rare birds, and observation towers. One of the unique things about Skidaway Island is that you can find both salt and fresh water here due to the way the rivers and marshes come together in the area. Here you can hike, swim in the pool, and look for unique wildlife. Skidaway Island also offers special events throughout the year. So grab your camping and hiking gear, and prepare to spend some time in this picturesque area! One of Georgia's first settlers came here and constructed this striking colonial estate. Noble Jones came to Georgia with James Oglethorpe, Savannah's founder. This gorgeous area is lined with huge oak trees that just exude history. Here you can view historic artifacts, a nature trail, and programs where costumed actors explain how early settlers would have lived. The Tabby Ruins help visitors see what it was like to be a British Colonist in the early 1700s. Wormsloe also has a picnic area and gift shop, plus a museum and special events throughout the year. This is a great place for those longing for a deeper glimpse of Georgia history. Wherever you visit in Savannah, you will feel a connection with Georgia's rich history.
