Hot San Francisco Festivals

Festivals in San Francisco are almost as vibrant and colorful as the city itself, and it's possible to make an entire trip out of simply going from festival to festival. While some go on year long, others are date specific; yet no matter what time or where you are in San Francisco, you are sure to find a festival happening.

May

Run in the 12 kilometer Bay to Breakers Charity Marathon alongside many diverse residents of San Francisco. Thousands of runners from all walks of life participate in this annual event that celebrates diversity while raising funds for local charities. Runners begin at the Bay Bridge and continue down Howard, Hayes and Fell streets while onlookers blast inspirational tunes. Finally they reach Golden Gate Park, where there is an impressive costume contest and music festival.

July

The North Beach Jazz Festival happens every July, and features some of the hottest Jazz bands in San Francisco. The festival lasts for five days, and over 40 bars and clubs along Grant Street host local and national jazz talent. You'll hear almost every known form of jazz at this festival, from soulful classics to styles just being invented. Catch one of the many free concerts in Washington Square Park and celebrate the rich history of San Francisco jazz.

August

Catch a free Shakespeare production in Golden Gate Park at the San Francisco Shakespeare Festival. Last year's performance was of The Tempest, and this season looks to be just as promising. Make sure to bring a blanket, chairs and something to eat.

September

Beach Street will be filled for two days with chocolate decadence at the Annual Ghirardelli Square Chocolate Festival. The weekend will feature a variety of chocolate delicacies from some of the best Bay Area restaurants along with live music, chef demonstrations and children's activities.

October

Who would expect to see German heritage on the San Francisco bay? This October, check out the Oktoberfest by the Bay, complete with singing, dancing, food and pints of beer. This year, the noted Chico Bavarian Band headlines Oktoberfest.

If you aren't in San Francisco during the summer months, be sure to see the Chinatown Night Market Fair, going on every Saturday night. Get your fortune told by a Chinese fortuneteller, or see traditional lion dancers at this free weekly display of vibrant Chinese Culture.

These are just a few of the many annual and semi-annual festivals going on in San Francisco, and there are many more. Come and converge with cultures, ideas and people from across the globe on a regular basis during your next visit to San Francisco.
