Annual Events in San Francisco, CA

In addition to the many famous attractions, landmarks, and hot spots San Francisco offers you, the Bay area is also home to a number of exciting special events throughout the year. Add some culture and excitement to your San Francisco getaway by spending time enjoying some of these special events while you are visiting the area.

On September 12 and September 13 this year, chocolate lovers from across the region will flock to Ghirardelli Square for the annual Chocolate Festival. This decadent event draws in folks of all ages and is sure to satisfy any sweet tooth. You can enjoy watching or participating in the sundae-eating contest, plenty of chocolate samples with everything from everyday dishes to true delicacies, vendors, entertainers, and more.

The following week, on September 19, the spotlight turns to the Exploratorium for the MadCat Women's International Film Festival. This festival showcases a variety of independent films that have been directed by women from around the world. In addition to watching innovative films that are the product of women's efforts, you can also take some time to peruse the many exhibits on display.

From October 10 through October 11, head over to Fisherman's Wharf and enjoy a world class performance of the world famous Navy Blue Angels during Fleet Week. This event also features an Air Force F-16 aerial demonstration, a Red Bull Air Race World Serious, a Parade of Ships in the bay, and more. This is the ideal way for everyone from families to military buffs to spend time in the city.

On November 28, locals and visitors alike will gather at Ghirardelli Square to kick off the holiday season right with the Annual Tree Lighting Celebration. This magical event includes holiday music, a special appearance by Saint Nick, hot cocoa and snacks, and the lighting of the Ghirardelli Square's famous 35-foot Christmas tree. This is a wonderful way to get the whole family in the holiday spirit.

If you have plans to be in San Francisco on January 19, 2010, be sure to head over to Pier 39 to help celebrate the 16th Anniversary of the Sea Lions' Arrival. Your whole family will love the close-up views and even personal interaction with the sea lions. You can also enjoy an educational session about these playful animals at the Marine Mammal Center at Pier 39.
