San Diego, California is home port to the largest base of the United States Navy on the west coast of the nation and the largest naval fleet in the world.
The land, buildings, and machinery were acquired by the United Sates Navy in 1921 and have since continued to grow to be the center of Naval Operations of today.
The port is home to 60 ships of the United States Navy including two Navy supercarriers, five amphibious assault ships, aircraft carriers, and submarines. The port is also home base to 50 separate commands which have specific and specialized support purposes. The Naval base employs 48,000 military and civilian personnel and deploys more than 3,500 missions annually.
