La Jolla Recreation Center located near the Pacific Ocean in San Diego,
California is a haven for community spirit. Designed in 1915, by the
renowned Irving Gill, La Jolla Recreation Center has been such a
vibrant part of the surrounding community that it is now recognized as
a historical landmark.
Irving Gill was an architectural modernists and created some of San
Diego's best architecture. Gill's design inspiration of La Jolla
Recreation Center can be seen in the "tilt-slab" technique.
Today, La Jolla Recreation Center features several community activities
aimed at children and anyone willing to learn something new. Sports,
dance classes, and day camps are available to children while adults can
participate in anything from belly-dancing to art classes.
La Jolla Recreation Center is centered on green lawns providing a
beautiful contrast to the stark white building. Ellen Browning Scripps,
community philanthropists in the early 1900, was the one who
commissioned the creation of La Jolla Recreation Center. Called La
Jolla Playground at its creation in 1915; it is hailed as the first of
its kind. There is a small bronze stature dedicated to Miss Scripps and
her giving spirit on the grounds of the Center.
La Jolla Recreation Center is a place where learning and the arts can
flourish for children of all ages, even if they are technically adults.
Most of the programs offered are free but there are some that ask for a
small fee. The area of La Jolla Recreation Centers hosts a museum,
gallery, and a library making a wonderful cultural center.
With the continued support of the neighborhood and the desire to learn
and grow; La Jolla Recreation Center has thrived throughout the years
and will do so for many more.
