Landmarks in San Antonio

Alamo

  • The first stop on any San Antonio visitor's list of things to do should be the Alamo, the site where 189 brave defenders fought 4,000 Mexican troops for 13 days. Although the Alamo eventually fell to General Santa Anna's troops, the cry "Long live the Alamo" symbolizes the courage and sacrifice of the Tejano and Texan men who fell here.
  • Although most famous for the Siege in 1836, the Alamo did not have its roots as a military post. It was the first mission in San Antonio, established in 1718 by Father Antonio Olivares, and housed missionaries and converts for 70 years. Visitors at the Alamo can see the original Chapel and Long Barracks, a Shrine, Wall of History, the Alamo Gardens and the Calvary Courtyard. Best Western Alamo Suites-Downtown and Comfort Suites Downtown both offer first-class lodging close to the Alamo and downtown San Antonio.

Fort Sam Houston

  • Another opportunity for those who want to learn more about the history of Texas is Fort Sam Houston. This Army post is unique because it is a key player in the modern Army, and also has a rich historical past. The fort was founded in 1845, and was named after the first president of the Republic of Texas, Sam Houston. The Pershing House, named after General John J. Pershing, and the Quadrangle with its clock tower and petting zoo, are things to see at Fort Sam.

Recreation in San Antonio

  • IMAX Theater, After seeing the actual Alamo, head over to the IMAX theater to catch the full story of the Siege and Battle of the Alamo and the colorful characters who helped defend it. The 6-story screen and 6-track stereo sound system will deliver all the drama and history of this famous landmark so clearly that you'll feel you were there during the battle!
  • Six Flags Fiesta Texas, This park features a waterpark, wooden and steel rollercoasters, a ferris wheel, boat and train rides, and merry-go-round. There is kid-friendly fun too, at Scooby Doo Ghostblasters, Bugs' White Water Rapids and Lil' Bronco Buster, to name a few.
  • Splashtown, When you're ready for a break from the rides, stop and enjoy one of the shows at the theater or amphitheater. Another San Antonio amusement park that's bound to cool you off on a hot Texas day is Splashdown, an 18-acre water park with 50 rides.
  • SeaWorld, You won't want to miss is SeaWorld, where visitors can meet Shamu, the famous killer whale, ride rollercoasters and water rides, catch a 3-D show in the new Sea Star Theater and enjoy a meal or snack at the sweet shop, grill or barbeque restaurant.

SeaWorld - San Antonio
enjoyed the 3D movies but felt the shows with Shamu weren't as good a several years ago. It seemed the trainers just had the whales splash water on people for entertainment. Would be better if maybe they indicated how they trained the animals on their video screens with the results in real life. kids really enjoyed the water park.
