The Alamo is by far the most visited historical site in the state of Texas, and has been ranked in the top ten historical sites visited in the United States. It is impossible to be in San Antonio without hearing or seeing some mention of this symbol of Texan Pride. While the site itself covers slightly more than four acres and features a shrine, Long Barrak Museum, Gift Shop, the old church and various gardens; there are plenty of other San Antonio attractions right around the corner. Read on to discover some of the best places to stay and visit during your trip to the Alamo, as well as the Alamo's fascinating history.

History

More than 2.5 million visitors come to see The Alamo each year, primarily to see the old mission where a small band of Texans held their ground for thirteen days against the Centralist army of General Antonio Lopez de Santa Ana. Even though the Alamo fell, the death of the Alamo defenders has come to symbolize both courage and sacrifice in the cause of liberty.
