Built in 1911, the Joseph Smith Memorial Building is located at what was once the imperial Hotel Utah.
The edifice has been completely renovated and restructured as an ode to the legendary Joseph Smith, who is accredited with having restored the Gospel of Jesus Christ and also translating the Book of Mormon. Today, you can view this impressive structure on a guided tour, which introduces you to the life and accomplishments of the founder of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day saints. Visitors can also watch a 70-minute long film about Joseph Smith and his legacy, aptly titled 'Joseph Smith — the Prophet of the Restoration'. Show times are scheduled at 9 am, 10:30 am, 12 pm, 1:30 pm, 3 pm, 4:30 pm, 6 pm, 7:30 pm and 9 pm, Monday through Saturday.
The present-day building also houses 13 banquet halls, which are leased out for meeting, banquets and wedding receptions to members of the church as well as non-members. You can also visit the Family Search Center, which is home to millions of genealogical records from across the globe and allows visitors in search of their family roots access to over 150 computer workstations. The Center is open to visitors from 9 am to 9 pm, Monday through Saturday.
Enthusiastic gourmets can also visit the two restaurants located on the 10th floor of the building — the Roof and the Garden. While discerning epicureans will delight in the eclectic spread these eateries offer, the breathtaking views of the Temple Square are sure to make a meal here a memorable and one-of-a-kind experience.
