Salt Lake City, Utah: Weather Information

Salt Lake City is a marvel when it comes to weather. From warm and sunny summer days to cool, snowy winter afternoons, and from green and mild springs to crisp, colorful autumns, Salt Lake City offers the best of each of the four seasons.

Summer in Salt Lake City

  • Summers feature low humidity and warm daytime highs in the lower to upper 80s. Overnight lows are in the 60s. July is the warmest month, and June, July, and August are all very dry, each with less than 1 inch of precipitation. Summertime is perfect for golfing or for enjoying outdoor recreational activities like hiking and cycling at the Wasatch-Cache National Forest. Visitors who come to Salt Lake in the summer will want to have plenty of cool short sleeved tops and shorts, as well as sunscreen, a wide brimmed hat, and sunglasses.

Winter in Salt Lake City

  • On the other end of the spectrum, winter is cold, but just as delightful as this is the time of year to enjoy the average of 535 inches of powdery snow just 35 minutes from the city! With 10 world-class ski resorts nearby, Salt Lake City is truly a haven for winter sports fans. January is the coolest month of the year. Winter daytime highs typically range from the low-to-mid 40s, with overnight lows just below freezing (27 to 30 degrees Fahrenheit). Winter travelers will want to have a warm winter coat, sweaters, long pants, plus winter accessories like gloves, scarves and boots.

Spring in Salt Lake City

  • When winter thaws and the days being to warm up, Salt Lake City comes alive with green foliage and wildflowers, especially in the nearby mountains and parks. With overnight lows in the upper 30s to the 50s, and daytime highs in the 50s and 60s, spring offers the unique opportunity of skiing during the morning and playing golf in the afternoon! This is also a great time of year to visit some of the city's parks, such as Pioneer Park and Warm Spring Park. May is the rainiest month of the year, but compared to a lot of places, it is still fairly dry, as 2.3 inches of rain falls in May.

Fall in Salt Lake City

  • Fall is a favorite season of many Salt Lake City visitors, as this is the time of year for ideal temperatures in the 50s, 60s, and 70s, as well as brilliant fall colors in the trees. Many fall visitors enjoy stopping by the nearby Wasatch Front to see the fall foliage in the mountains and canyons and also to engage in rock climbing and mountain biking. Fall is also a good time of year to visit Olympic Park. Overnight lows during autumn are typically in the 40s and 50s, with some nights falling into the mid to upper 30s in November. Fall visitors will want to have plenty of short-sleeved shirts, both pants and shorts, and a lightweight jacket.
