For years, the Downtown Malls shopping complex was the place to go for a great shopping experience in the heart of Salt Lake City. The Downtown Malls was a comprised of two large indoor malls just a short distance from each other. These two malls, the ZCMI Center and the Crossroads Mall, together served the residents of the Salt Lake City collectively with over 130 specialty shops. These shops included chain boutiques, locally owned stores, restaurants, and even department stores such as Nordstrom, Mervyn's, Meier Frank, and others. There were also over thirty restaurants included in this complex, such as the Chiang Thai Grill, Long John Silver, Schlotzsky's, and Cilantro's. Adding to the convenience, you could often find special events running throughout the year to make your shopping trip to the Downtown Malls extra special.

These two malls were recently torn down to make way for new developments in the area. The new developments include the outdoor downtown shopping mall that will be known as the Gateway, and a mixed use development called the City Creek Center. These two areas will be urban meccas when both are open. The Gateway is open now, and the City Creek Center is expected to home in 2010. Spanning over twenty acres on three city blocks in the heart of the city, this commercial center will include residential space, office space, and retail stores. The outdoor nature of the centers encourages pedestrian foot traffic, to give you the impression of a small town American ambiance. Yet with a distinctly upscale décor and upscale boutiques, with lush landscaping highlighted by fountains and other landscaping features, these two shopping areas put an upscale spin on small town America.

Some of the stores and restaurants you will find at the Gateway include A Pea In The Pod, Abercrombie, Aeropostale, Banana Republic, Foot Locker, Express, Forever 21, Gap, American Eagle Outfitters, Applebee's, Ben and Jerry's, Biaggi's, Fleming's, Edo Japan, and more. Entertainment options at the Gateway include a 12 screen movie theater, the Clark Planetarium and IMAX Theater, and the Discovery Gateway Children's Musem. At the City Creek Center, you will find large department stores like Macy's and Nordstrom, a Harmon's grocery store, and over 500,000 square feet of additional retail and restaurant space.

You can stay close to these two fine shopping malls when you choose lodging at the Hotel Monaco, the Salt Lake Plaza Hotel at Temple Square, the Shilo Inn Salt Lake City, and the Hilton Salt Lake City Center.
