Solitude is one of Salt Lake City's 'big four' ski areas that also includes Brighton, Alta and Snowbird. These four skiing meccas get some of the best and most snow on earth, 500" every year of the fluffiest powder in the world. Located near the top of Big Cottonwood Canyon in the Wasatch Mountains, Solitude has a 10,000 ft (3,059 m) elevation and covers 1,200 acres that include some of the area's best terrain. There are 8 lifts, including three new high-speed quads for the 2008-09 season. The new lifts provide easier loading and unloading, plus quicker rides, eliminating frequent starts and stops. Multi-day tickets provide several options for maximum enjoyment. At Solitude there's an ongoing commitment to snow sports education, providing 70% intermediate and beginner runs. Ninety professional, staff instructors emphasize learning through play for both adults as well as children. The Solitude focus is on fun as well as technique and safety. This is the only snow sports school in Utah that offers all four disciplines: alpine, Nordic, snowboarding and downhill Telemarking. The Development (or Devo) Team trains a small group of 30 skiers ages 6 through 13 for professional competition.
