Be amazed and entertained as snow skiers participate in the "contest for skiers who don't do contests": The Red Bull Cold Rush at the Red Mountain Resort in Rossland, British Columbia. Eighteen of the sport's elite skiers will run through a gambit of skiing disciplines to find out who is the king of them all. You'll see skiers drop off gigantic cliffs, shred around backcountry peaks, and run a little hike and ride. You can catch these skiers on a natural cliff zone, then to a big mountain, and culminating in a summit approach, all in an effort to see which skier is the most versatile, the best all-around.
The Red Mountain Ski Resort has been around for more than 110 years. Its history dates back to 1890, when gold-copper ore was discovered in Canada's Monashee Mountain Range. With the gold rush came an enormous amount of Scandinavians. These northern Europeans brought with them their fanatical love of all things skiing. They organized the Rossland Ski Club, and held the first recorded ski compettion in Canada: A downhill race, which ran on February 15, 1896, down the south side of the mountain and ending where the present Rossland Historical Museum sits.
Red Mountain Ventures is in the process of a 10- to 15-year upgrading of the area, looking to bring 1,400 dwelling units and 70,000 square feet of commercial space. For the latest season, Red Mountain Resort has introduced many facilities and features, including a new chair lift and expanded beginner's terrain, a new and improved terrain park, and the Moutain Project, which is a multi-year program designed to bring together all walks of outdoor life.
