Virginia Historical Society in Richmond, VA
The Virginia Historical Society in Richmond, VA is the oldest private historical society in the south, founded in 1831. This group is responsible for the world's biggest collection of artifacts that tell the history of Virginia all the way into present time. They have many rotating exhibits but there is one that is permanent called "The Story of Virginia, an American Experience."
Most of the collection that the Virginia Historical Society controls is in the Virginia House which was converted into a museum. This home was built before the stock market crash in 1929 by the Wendell family and was constructed to look like a 16th century English manor. Facing the James River, it is in a picturesque setting.
There are some pieces housed in the Battle Abbey, the Virginia Historical Society's headquarters. This neoclassical building was built in 1913 to honor the soldiers fallen in the Civil War. There are countless historical treasures that the Society controls and you will see such items as a pair of eyeglasses from Patrick Henry and even real gold buttons from a hat that Pocahontas wore. Weapons made in Virginia to use in the wars are also on display.
Hours for visiting are typically Monday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. as well as Sunday hours from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., although the library is closed on Sabbath day. Located in the Richmond Museum district, it is in great company with many other historical activities in the area. The Virginia Historical Society provides the public an exceptional education about the history of the area which has shaped an entire nation.
