Dedicated to preserving the legacy of tradition and history of Richmond, the Valentine Richmond History Center is a marvelous place for locals to explore their roots and for visitors to gain a unique perspective into this extraordinary city.
The History Center houses an array of exhibits, both permanent and rotating, which feature a comprehensive picture of Richmond through the ages. The permanent inventory of exhibits includes the Edward V. Valentine Sculpture Studio, which is also one of the only four surviving studios still open to visitors, in the country. You can also take a guided tour into the Wickham House which dates back to 1812, and was also the first location of the Valentine Museum. This house still retains many of its original artifacts and ornaments which reflect the refined lifestyle of the Wickhams, while the slave quarters, which are located in the basement, allow you to take a look at the other side of the picture as well. There is also the spectacular display of vintage neon signs and photographs from various Richmond businesses through the changing times which are an apt representation of the commercial development in this region.
The rotating exhibits are regularly updated to expand the center's inventory, and include a selection of photographs that depict the various events that have shaped modern-day Richmond. You can also step into the gallery to view the exhaustive process that goes into the preservation of fine art, with a special emphasis on toys, silver, ceramics, glass and artifacts. The curators and collections staff, who are present from Tuesdays through Fridays, allow you valuable insights into the process of preservation. You can view these exhibits on public guided tours or even schedule an appointment with a dedicated docent for your group. The History Center also conducts several events through the year which are aimed at visitors of all ages and areas of interest. In the 'Picture the Past' enrichment program, children can literally take a look past the portals of time, through the vast collection of pictures that the center has on display, while 'The Shape of our House' allows them to investigate the shapes and colors that a house needs via the Wickham House. The Adult Programs are also themed on similar premises as the children's programs but allow a more in-depth and detailed understanding of the subject matter.
The Valentine Richmond History Center also houses a café where you can halt for a quick bite with the interestingly named sandwiches and salads or even visit for a hearty breakfast. You can also host your private gathering or celebration at the Center premises and add the decades of history add their own inimitable touch to your event. The Gift Shop also stores great Richmond themed memorabilia that you can take home with you as souvenirs or as thoughtful gifts.
The Valentine Richmond History Center is open from 10 am to 5 pm, Tuesday through Saturday and 12 noon to 5 pm on Sunday. Admission is priced at $10 per person, with special discounts for students and seniors.
