The Jackson Ward District in Richmond, Virginia was once considered the Harlem of the South as black culture and business thrived there. Jackson Ward District was frequented by Duke Ellington, Billie Holiday, and James Brown among others. The area was the home of Maggie L. Walker, the first woman to charter and serve as president of an American bank.
Today, you can visit the Maggie L. Walker national historic site, explore the Black History Museum and Cultural Center, see the Bojangles Monument, or just enjoy the Second Street Festival.
