Museum of the Confederacy in Richmond, VA is jewel just because of the architecture alone. This huge masterpiece with the stately white columns was once home to Jefferson Davis, the President of the Confederate States. Today however, it houses the country's biggest collection of artifacts from the Confederacy as well as the Civil War.
The interior is rather fancy with its Victorian period décor but this museum houses some of the most significant pieces of history that have shaped the very foundation of this country. You will see exhibits of all the major wars, squirmishes and other events around the Civil War era. Weapons of the time are displayed along side various pieces of uniforms and clothing appropriate to the period.
Robert E. Lee's sword carried during his surrender at Appomattox is displayed as are items which depict how the African-Americans contributed to the Civil War effort. Every inch of the place is chockfull of historically significant pieces from artwork of the time to replicas of war headquarters. This White House of the Confederacy saw many notable figures from American History cross its threshold like President Abraham Lincoln, Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson.
The museum itself can be explored on your own but in order to see the home itself, you must be with a guided tour. The tour of both the house and museum is around two hours so give yourself plenty of time in your daily schedule to allow for it. Admission prices vary and discounts are available. Parking can be validated in the museum lobby for free parking. The Museum of he Confederacy is an absolute must if you are on a historic tour of the area in Richmond. Their tours are better than any history lesson you get from a book.
