One of the most beautiful tree-lined boulevards in the country, the Monument Avenue is also home to some of the most legendary names in the history of the country, who are commemorated in the forms of monuments dedicated to them and give the street its name.
The largest monument on the avenue is the Robert E Lee lithograph which has been inspired by a painting by artist Adalbert Volck. The monument has been created by the renowned French sculptor Marius Lean Antonin Aercie and depicts a 60 foot sculpture of Lee atop his steed. There is also the Jefferson Davis monument which is comprised of thirteen Doric columns and a statue of Jefferson Davis sculpted by E. V. Valentine. This is one of the largest monuments on the street and also one of the most spectacular. The Stonewall Jackson Monument has been created by Frederick W. Sievers which honors the Confederate General Thomas Jonathan Stonewall Jackson.
At the very end of the street is the J.E. B. Stuart Monument which depicts the General astride his horse. The newest addition to the Monument Avenue is the Arthur Ashe Jr. Monument which portrays the tennis star Arthur Ashe surrounded by children who are depicted as reaching skyward, inspired by Arthur's noteworthy accomplishments.
The Monument Avenue is also breathtaking in the exquisite architectural beauty which is reflected in the array of stately structures which line the street. A brilliant juxtaposition of styles, which range from the classic English Tudor to the elegant Georgian and the magnificent Italiante, the street is a delightful sight for artistic eyes.
All in all, irrespective of whether it's your first visit to Richmond or one of several to follow, make sure that a visit to the Monument Avenue is an irreplaceable part of your schedule.
